Agricultural laws in some state prohibit the transportation of plants across state lines. Plant cuttings may not be subject to the same regulations and may provide another way to move your plants with you to your new home. Make sure you are aware of laws with regard to the transport of plants in the state you are moving to and states you may cross.
Plants will travel best with you in your personal vehicle. Conditions in the moving truck may prove unsuitable for your plants. Below are steps to preparing a plant to move.
Prune plant to make it easier to pack.
A few days prior to the move, water the plant and place in a plastic bag with air holes in it and keep in a cool place. If you are concerned about insects, you may leave bag closed overnight with pesticide on the plant.
The day before the move you may place these plants in boxes. Use packing paper to secure the bottom of the pot and prevent movement. You may use crumpled packing paper to cushion the leaves as well.
Set these boxes aside so they will not be loaded by the mover.
The day of the move you may close the boxes and punch holes in the top.
Take care to park in shade in summer and sun in winter while you are traveling.
Unload your plants at your new home as soon as you can after arrival. If you can open the box from the bottom you may avoid breaking fragile leaves and stems.
Place plants where they can adapt to their new location slowly. Expose them to light gradually.
